A Wedding Gift With a Deadline on It

Most wedding presents are for the years afterwards. Robes are one of the few that have a specific morning to be used on, which changes when you have to give them.

Why we recommend it

This is a gift with a date, and that is genuinely unusual. Matching robes get worn on the getting-ready morning, in every photograph taken before anyone is dressed, and then on the honeymoon — which means they have to arrive before the wedding, not on the day. Almost nothing else on the gift table works that way, and it is the single most useful thing to know about buying them.

It photographs, which is a real function rather than a vain one. The hour before a wedding is one of the most heavily documented of a couple's life, and what they are wearing in it is in an album forever. A pair of matched robes is a small, cheap intervention in pictures they will look at for decades.

Afterwards it becomes ordinary in the good way. The wedding-morning use is the occasion; the four years of Sunday mornings are the value. Waffle knit is the lighter, less bulky end of the robe spectrum, which is why hotels use it — it is the kind of robe people actually keep wearing rather than the heavy one that lives on the back of a door.

Who it's best for

  • A couple whose wedding is still ahead of them
  • Anyone giving early rather than on the day
  • A honeymoon or any hotel stay in the near future
  • A couple who lounge — some people simply never wear a robe

What makes it a good gift

  • Has an actual moment to be used, unlike most wedding gifts
  • Appears in the photographs taken before the ceremony
  • Becomes ordinary weekend wear afterwards

Important considerations

The things worth checking before you order — this is where gifts like this most often go wrong.

  • Give it before the wedding or the best use of it is already gone. A robe handed over at the reception has missed the morning it was made for. If you cannot get it to them in advance, this is the wrong gift and something for the home is the right one.
  • “One size fits most” is the risk in this whole category. The listing gives the women's robe at about 44 inches at the bust and 46.5 inches long, and the men's at about 51 inches at the bust and 49 inches long — read those numbers against the couple rather than trusting the phrase, because a robe that does not close is not a gift, and returning clothing before a wedding is a job nobody wants.
  • A waffle-weave polyester robe is a lounging robe, not a towelling one. If someone is expecting the thick absorbent robe they associate with a spa, this is a different object — lighter, thinner, quicker to dry. That suits hotel mornings and warm climates and disappoints anyone who wanted to be wrapped in something heavy.
  • Polyester next to the skin is a matter of preference and some people dislike it, particularly for something worn over bare skin in summer. Where you know one of them prefers natural fibres, cotton waffle exists and is worth the search.
  • “Mr and Mrs” embroidery makes these unwearable for anyone else and slightly pointed if the marriage is not the couple's first or the wording does not fit them. It is not removable.
  • Check the colour against the wedding rather than against your own taste, if the photographs are part of the point. White reads as bridal, grey and navy read as ordinary loungewear, and the couple may well have a plan for those pictures already.

Pros

  • One of the few wedding gifts with a specific moment to be used
  • Ends up in the pre-ceremony photographs
  • Light waffle knit is the robe style people keep wearing
  • Works again for every hotel stay afterwards
