A Letter Says Less Than a Slogan, Which Is Why It Lasts Longer

A single letter cannot embarrass her, and a slogan can. A mug that declares a relationship, an in-joke or a mood is a public statement she has to keep agreeing with, on a desk, in front of colleagues, for years. A monogram makes no claim at all — it marks the mug as hers and stops there, which is the one job personalisation actually needs to do.

It does not date. Slogan mugs age badly in two directions: the phrasing goes stale, and the relationship named on the side can change. A letter is inert. The same mug works at a desk now, in a shared kitchen next year and in a house she moves into a decade from now, which is an unusual amount of longevity for something this cheap.

It is the safest personalised gift when you do not know her taste. Compare the alternative — a mug carrying a friendship message — which is lovely from a close friend and faintly presumptuous from anybody else.

• Check the letter in the dropdown rather than in the photograph. This is the failure mode of every A–Z variant listing: the main image shows one letter while the selected variant is another, and a mug with the wrong initial on it is not a gift, it is a return.
• Decide which initial you are actually giving. A first-name initial is the safe default. A surname initial can be wrong within a year, and for someone recently married or about to be it is a small landmine — where you are unsure, use the first name.
• Gold and metallic decoration usually means no microwave, whatever else the listing claims. Metallic printing arcs, and most people reheat coffee at some point in the morning, so this is worth checking and worth mentioning when you hand it over.
• Treat dishwasher claims lightly on any decorated mug. Repeated hot cycles fade printed and foiled decoration in a way fired-in glaze resists, and hand washing is the honest advice for anything with gold on it.
• If you want the gift to say something about the friendship rather than simply name her, this is the wrong mug and a boxed friendship set is the right one. The two are answers to genuinely different questions, and buying the wrong answer is how a good mug ends up in a cupboard.
